A Friday Night Downtown: Inside First Friday

By late afternoon, the Square begins to change.

Barricades go up. Tents unfold. Food trucks settle into place. Classic cars roll in polished and proud. Vendors arrange handmade goods, downtown merchants get ready to welcome guests, and children start watching the whole thing come together with wide eyes.

Before long, First Friday has arrived.

Held May through October from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., First Friday is downtown Scottsville’s standing invitation to gather. It is part street fair, part car show, part local market, part family night, and part front porch. Around here, folks often describe it as feeling like a family reunion - the kind of evening where you connect and reconnect with old friends, neighbors, classmates, cousins, and people you somehow know even if you cannot quite remember how.

For someone who has never been, First Friday is easy to love.

Come hungry. Bring a friend. Stroll the vendor booths. Admire the classic cars. Let the kids enjoy the evening’s activities. Pop into downtown shops. Listen for live music. Find something good from a local restaurant or food truck. Stay long enough to see the Square settle into that golden, good-natured rhythm small towns do best.

Each month brings its own theme and flavor. Some evenings are playful and family-focused. Others celebrate local service, music, patriotism, churches, school spirit, creativity, or the changing seasons. The details shift from month to month, but the heart of the evening stays the same: downtown Scottsville filled with people, welcome, and life.

The car show is a part of the event experience, not something separate from it. You will see classic cars tucked right into the life of the evening, with owners visiting, families stopping to look, and the shine of chrome adding one more layer of charm to the Square.

First Friday is also a good reason to support downtown merchants. Shops are open late and our First Friday Passport encourages guests to visit local businesses as well as guest vendors. It is a simple way to explore more of downtown, discover places you may not have been in a while, and make sure the evening benefits the businesses that help keep the Square active year-round.

Parking is simple, too. Just one block off the Square in any direction, you will find free public parking within an easy walk of the event.

For vendors, First Friday is a chance to set up in the heart of the community. For merchants, it brings foot traffic and familiar faces. For sponsors, it is a visible way to support one of Scottsville’s favorite traditions. For Heart of Scottsville, it is part of the larger work of bringing people downtown and reminding them that the Square still belongs at the center of community life.

There is a great deal of planning behind the scenes: permits, vendor coordination, setup, safety, promotion, volunteers, cleanup, and communication. But the goal is straightforward.

We want downtown to feel alive.

We want guests to feel welcomed.

We want vendors and merchants to have a good evening.

We want families to make memories on the Square.

And we want people to leave thinking, “We should do this again.”

That is First Friday at its best: a warm evening, a lively downtown, and a town gathering under open sky.

First Friday feels a little like a family reunion - a place to connect, reconnect, and remember why downtown still matters.
